In 1862, Dr. Rhesa W. Read joined other Bowie County residents by enlisting in the 29th Texas Cavalry regiment during the Civil War. Read and the 29th would enter Indian Territory in early 1863 and join a brigade of other North Texas Confederates in defense of a Union invasion. The events in Indian Territory were hardly about the Civil War. Instead, the Five Tribes were embroiled in a battle for survival against two white governments at once. Dr. Read and the men from Bowie County found themselves caught in the middle of a diplomatic struggle for Indian sovereignty, not a war for the perpetuation of slavery.

Dr. Weeks' book, Cherokee Civil Warrior, describes what Read and the men from Bowie County experienced in Indian Territory. Founded on the letters of Dr. Read, this story changes what we know about the Civil War in Indian Territory, and about U.S. Indian policy. It also teaches us something important and new about Abraham Lincoln.
